about

Real Life is an album I've been planning since 2010, before The Greenhouse Effect came out (although none of the songs were written by that time). I wanted to release an album called People where each song was somebody's name--the goal was to represent the numerous types of relationships we have with others and the way they impact and shape our lives. Some are real, some are fictional; some we know, some we admire (or despise) from a distance; some we see every day, some may have been a chance encounter from years ago that still sticks with us. Every one of these people and the interactions we have with them, big and small, have a profound impact on who we are in the moment. The purpose of this album is to acknowledge a variety of these connections and capture each one of them in a song.

Somewhere along the way, after I already had a working version of the album, I found that the original concept I was going for wasn't quite clicking. With some help from Jake Jackson, I realized that the issue was that I only actually said the name of the person I wrote the song about in one of the songs (Nate). I thought this would have made the concept itself a more confusing than enriching experience for most listeners who didn't know what my intent was in writing the songs, so I gave them proper titles and kept the names as parenthetical subtitles so the original vision of the album could be maintained. Thus, Real Life was born.

Considering my last album, Dystopian Blues, was three years ago and was quite a departure from my regular songwriting style, I'm glad to have written an album that highlights songwriting, vocals, guitar, and piano more strongly as its core components (although I'm not opposed to doing another Dystopian Blues style album some day in the future). My hope is that you enjoy the album, and take some time to think about who each song makes you think of in your life.
